THE OPEN ACADEMY OF TOURISM - A GLOBAL CASE OF EXCELLENCE

In 2008, the United Nations World Tourism Organisation distinguished 'The Open Academy of Tourism' as a high relevancy project for training and education in tourism. The 'Open Academy of Tourism' was launched in September 2004 to encourage and support the Portuguese tourism regions to define and implement tourism strategies able to leverage local resources. The project leads to a unique learning and knowledge experiment of the art and practice of destination leadership and management, giving rise to the development of 13 strategic plans between 2004 and 2007.
 
 

TOURIST MERIT MEDAL

IPDT was awarded the Tourist Merit Medial by the Portuguese government in September 2011. The award was in recognition of its work and support for applied research and teaching in the Tourism Sector and subsidiary areas.

 

 

WORLD TOURISM ORGANISATION (UNWTO)

IPDT is an affiliate member of the World Tourism Organisation; and is part of a restricted group of entities dedicated to "the positive development of tourism", composed of consulting companies, teaching institutions, destination management companies and NGOs from all over the world.
 
 

RECOGNITION BY THE BRITISH LIBRARY

The thesis "A study of strategic planning and environmental scanning in the multi-unit Portuguese hotel sector", by António Jorge Costa, president of the IPDT, was recognised by the British Library as being a piece of work of "high educational value", being made available online by the University of Surrey.
 
 

WORLD HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM THEMES - SPECIAL EDITION

IPDT was responsible for a special edition of the Worldwide Hospitality and Tourism Themes (WHATT), Vol 2, nr. 4-2010, on "How can tourist destinations become more competitive - What key tools can be used to achieve this aim?" WHATT is an Emerald Journal that provides theme assessments on the great challenges facing tourism and hotels.
 
 

WORLD HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM THEMES - SPECIAL EDITION

IPDT was responsible for the editon of the Vol. 6, nr. 5 - 2014 of the Worldwide Hospitality and Tourism Themes magazine, dedicated to the theme: "Did the context of economic crisis affect the image of Portugal as a tourist destination?". WHATT is an Emerald Journal that provides theme assessments on the great challenges facing tourism and hotels.
